It empowers development teams to build and evolve experiences with speed. It provides editors and creators with a unified and interconnected suite of tools, which they can use with confidence to make the world's best journalism.</p> <p>Within Publishing, the Starter Kit team develops the foundational shared libraries and UI components that provide leverage to teams building applications on Scoop, our CMS and publishing platform.</p> <p>As an Engineering Manager, you will be a key technical and operational leader, working with product, design, and newsroom partners to build solutions for a variety of editorial and internal customer workflows. You will lead a team of 5-6 engineers and report to a Senior Engineering Manager.</p> <p><strong>Responsibilities:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Manage, coach, and mentor a team of 5-6 mid- to staff level engineers; create career development plans, provide feedback, and identify growth opportunities.</li> <li>Guide the technical strategy with a tech lead and work with partners to plan the product roadmap.</li> <li>Oversee team processes, measurement, and delivery; help engineers break down work into small chunks, identify dependencies and tradeoffs, and remove roadblocks. Advocate for AI and Agentic development.</li> <li>Hold a high technical bar, guiding the team to decisions that ensure the product is performant, secure, observable, and high quality.</li> <li>Be the bridge between the engineering team, partners, and stakeholders. Help the team understand the business context and editorial goals for the work. Advocate for technical maintenance.</li> <li>Cultivate a team culture built on trust, collaboration and psychological safety</li> <li>Demonstrate support and understanding of our <a href="https://www.nytco.com/company/mission-and-values/" target="_blank">value of journalistic independence</a> and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Basic Qualifications:</strong></p> <ul> <li>1+ years as an Engineering Manager with people management responsibilities</li> <li>5+ years of hands-on experience as a software engineer with expertise in the modern frontend ecosystem (TypeScript/ES6+, HTML, and CSS)</li> <li>Experience with building applications on cloud computing platforms like AWS or GCP</li> <li>Experience planning a roadmap with cross-functional peers and managing execution and delivery</li> </ul> <p><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong></p> <div class="has-nudge" data-nudge-id="c232e8cf-4ee4-41f2-9260-a5cbca611257"> <ul> <li>Experience working with GraphQL APIs, Apollo Client or collaborative rich text editing software</li> <li>Experience working on design systems and shared libraries for frontend software</li> <li>Interest in or prior experience leading teams to develop productive AI and agentic workflows</li> <li>Interest in or prior experience with digital journalism or content management</li> </ul> </div> <p>#LI-Hybrid</p> <p>REQ-020556</p> <p><strong>Compensation and Benefits For This Role:</strong></p> <p>In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
