In this role you will develop detailed electrical designs, schematics, models, and supporting documentation that translate engineering concepts into manufacturable products, supporting ALS-U engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and installation activities.
ALS-U is an upgrade to the laboratory’s Advanced Light Source, a 1.9 GeV storage ring optimized to produce intense beams of soft x-rays. The upgrade introduces a multibend achromat lattice that will make the source orders of magnitude brighter and provide a significantly higher fraction of coherent light in the soft x-ray region than is available today. The work is hands-on design support on a large, complex scientific instrument, in close coordination with the engineers building it.

Key Responsibilities

Create and maintain electrical models, wiring diagrams, schematics, and panel layouts using project-approved CAD software, which may include AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor, KiCad, and other tools designated by the laboratory.

Review and revise designs based on engineering feedback, design reviews, and approved engineering changes.

Generate bills of materials, wire and cable lists, and supporting documentation for manufacturing and assembly activities, prepared in sufficient detail to support the intended fabrication, assembly, or installation.

Produce design packages supporting fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation, including engineering drawing revisions and other revision-controlled documentation needed to execute project work.

Collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, project managers, and other designated project personnel to ensure designs meet technical requirements and integrate with applicable product assemblies.

Participate in design coordination and design-review activities as requested by the laboratory technical representative.

Perform assigned work in accordance with applicable industry standards, codes, and internal quality requirements.

Maintain organized design files, libraries, and revision-controlled documentation within Windchill or other laboratory-designated systems.

Required Education & Experience
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, drafting/design, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience. A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience producing electrical CAD designs is required.

Top Skills & Requirements

Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience producing electrical CAD designs using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical, KiCad, or equivalent software.

Demonstrated experience developing manufacturing-ready electrical documentation, including electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials, and wire or cable schedules.

Experience developing and maintaining revision-controlled engineering documentation within Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) or Product Data Management (PDM) systems.

Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical components, schematic development, and wiring practices.

Familiarity with applicable industry standards and codes relevant to electrical design activities

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting DOE national laboratories, research facilities, particle accelerators, or other complex scientific or industrial engineering projects.

Experience using Autodesk Inventor for three-dimensional electrical or electromechanical design.

Experience integrating electrical and mechanical CAD models.

Experience using Windchill for engineering document and configuration management.

Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, installation, or commissioning of complex engineered systems.

Contract Details

Duration: 1-year base period with one (1) additional 1-year option period.
